We're getting geared up for the 5th Annual Timberbeast Challenge to be held on June 19th in Troy, Mt. which will once again be a part of both the Inland NW Series and the MT Series.

Here are a few words from Ralph:

On one of the first sunny days in Lincoln County since mid November the Timberbeast awoke and realized that the time is drawing near for the assault of over 100 disc golf junkies from across the Pacific Northwest to converge on Troy to make their futile attempt to tame the Beast. Let the challenge begin….

Following the tournament there will be the awards ceremony at Roosevelt Park followed by the “DISCS ACROSS THE KOOTENIA" competition as mentioned in Discgolfer magazine. 100’s of local yokels will line the banks of the Kootenia to oooh and ahhh while players attempt the 520 foot toss across the Kootenia river from the cliffs on the opposite shore of Roosevelt Park.

There will be food vendors as in the past and this year the band most enjoyed over the last 5 years, Andre Floyd and Mood Iguana, will play the entire evening in two sets going till midnight. The unique Timberbeast trophies are being hand carved by several wood gnomes and wood nymphs way up in the Yaak. As in the past there will be free camping at the park and discs will fly long into the evening thrown by all those who can’t seem to get enough of that buzzing sound.

Rumors circulating across the internet that the Timber Beast have been neutered have been greatly exaggerated. This winter the county contracted to have the park containing the course “thinned”. In the process four fairways were wacked pretty hard. With the help of the Lincoln County Road crew along with Brian and Erik from GCF’s and local disc golf junkies these holes plus several others have been redesigned. We moved four t-pads and moved a number of baskets and as a result added about 600 feet to the overall course length. The result as reported by local players has been someone that used to play at 5-6 under is now, on a good day, coming in at par. It will be a bit easier for players to find their discs this year and should make things move along smoother, but, over the next year or two the vegetation will grow back to leave a much more challenging yet interesting course.

With a short 45 minute drive players will also be able to have a look at Lincoln Counties newest Disc golf course at Libby Dam created the Corp of Engineers at the visitor center. With some long fairways, extreme elevation shots, and the ultimate scenery all around the course will be ready for its first major tournament later this summer.

Many more local youth have been playing the game as a result of players last year donating over 100 used discs. We ask that once again this year that players consider donating some of their used plastic to the youth of Troy. If you’ve attended the Timber Beast in the past this year consider bringing a friend or perhaps your family as there is a splash pool and playground at the campground as well as a kid's fishing pond and walking trail. This event is truly family friendly.

Beast registration

Look for registration to open for the Timberbeast Challenge the week of May 24th. As in years past, we will have 2 pools of players in order to accomodate everyone who wants to participate in the good time. We will also have a firm schedule posted by then, too.

As Ralph mentioned, the new course at the Libby Dam will be playable by then and we are thinking about holding a random draw dubs round there on Sunday morning following the tourney. More info on that soon, but you may want to think about that when making your travel plans.

Who's gonna tame the Beast this year?

I can't wait for the

I can't wait for the Timberbeast and I hope I can get up to the new course at Libby Dam. I am not sure if I will be able to tame the Beast but will at least try to tame that darn Kootenai River again Crown I'll see if my wimpy little noodle arm can handle getting over the river now. I don't feel like I have been throwing really well but am interested to see what I can do. I guess I will hope that I can get over again then hope that I get another nice skip off the boat-launch pavement, then maybe hope again that everyone else who throws farther than me loses their discs again - Sorry McCoy and D Wink

I am trying hard to think of something good to play for. I think we need to give the winner something like the little brown jug. Every year the previous champion brings the trophy back for the next winner. Anyone have a green sport coat or something good to play for?

Beast Improvements

There have been a few changes to the Timberbeast since last year. The County thinned all the underbrush from the course last winter, so we have changed up the course some to take advantage of the new alleys that have opened up and to remove most of the cross-over fairways. The more noticeable changes are:
Hole 4 - tee pad moved left about 20' into the trees to protect it from hole 3
Hole 6 - the short basket - has been lengthened about 120'
Hole 9 - the tee has been moved back and to the left about 35'
Hole 13 - hole right before the tracks - the basket has been moved back and left about 75'
Hole 16 - now an enirely new hole about 240' through a treed glade to a protected basket
Hole 18 - basket has been moved back about 200' to nearly the Caboose
There have been a few more less noticeable changes to a few of the other holes, but they shouldn't affect play much.

For the tourney, we will be playing alternate basket placement locations on several holes for Friday dubs and Round 1. Round 2 will be all permanent placements.

The County has just ordered 18 new Discatcher Pro baskets for the Beast. They should be installed in the next week or so and will really dress up the Beast.
