Distance

It is approximately 500ft. from the road across the river to the landing zone. It plays more like 600-650ft. Halfway across your discs will become really understable and tend to turn over hard. Most discs never make it more than halfway across because of the change in air pressure over the river. If the river is flowing high and fast you will have a strong right to left wind. If it is low then there will be minimal wind and it will play closer to 500ft. Hope that helps. Beer

Just throw it low, hard, and

Just throw it low, hard, and straight and choose the right disc and you'll get over if you have enough power. That's all I did last year and I got 4/5 over. Let the disc do the work and use the downhill. Don't throw big high anhyzers, I didn't see that work for too many people last year. I would also say that if you don't have a pretty good arm that you probably shouldn't try because if you don't get over than you are just putting plastic garbage in the Kootenai River. Crown

It actually plays less since

It actually plays less since the elevation drops from the "tee" to the landing on the other side. I think it actually plays about 500 feet but it is probably about 520 or 530 feet across.

Umm

Billy have you even thrown across the river??? It plays longer because of the change in air pressure in the middle of the river. The air pressure is greater causing the discs to turnover and slow down halfway across.Yes it is down hill slightly but that doesn't help when you have to battle the increased pressure. LOL now I know why I can come back after a 6 month hiatus and still throw as far as you...j/k.

haha

Thats ridiculous smoke'ems!!! your education seems to be getting in the way of reality... I think what your referring to is the uncontrollable Gateway discs you throw... not the pressure difference over the river, which might be there, but very subtle Im sure...

oh.. and.. A) $20 on Billy- long drive, no question. Usually you want to be able to back-up smack talk...

Ya, I actually got one across

Ya, I actually got one across last year, lol, with the three others that I threw were only a max of about 50 or 60 feet from getting dry. And I know that neither I nor probably anyone in the club (except maybe D?) can throw a true 600 foot shot. And if a disc is actually turning over, doesnt that mean that it is still in the high speed portion of the flight?

The elevation drop will make

The elevation drop will make it play a lot shorter than the actual distance.

As far as I know, Scott doesn't throw 500 feet on flat ground, more like 450'ish. So if he is making it across 4/5, then it probably plays close to 450' or less.

From the Timberbeast

From the Timberbeast thread...

"Following the tournament there will be the awards ceremony at Roosevelt Park followed by the “DISCS ACROSS THE KOOTENIA" competition as mentioned in Discgolfer magazine. 100’s of local yokels will line the banks of the Kootenia to oooh and ahhh while players attempt the 520 foot toss across the Kootenia river from the cliffs on the opposite shore of Roosevelt Park. "

There is no way that it will end up playing longer than 520 feet unless you throw some crazy turnover shot that actually flies parallel with the river and then fades super hard to land on the other side. Its like saying that if you have a headwind while throwing uphill that you will end up throwing shorter than the hole actually is.

Sorry Double D, I think

Sorry Double D, I think you're full of crap - sorry to be so blunt. I have to agree with Ol' Bob and Lyle. Get out of your own head and just throw. Don't worry what the air is doing over the river, it's really not that hard. It definitely plays less than 500 ft. There's no way in hell I can throw 600ish. I think Lyle's numbers are pretty close, I creep close (maybe flirt with 450) on a good day but would say on an average day a good throw for me is gonna top out at maybe 430ft without worrying too much about what the air over the ground is doing Wink

Ummm

Yes because we know physics doesn't apply to discs in flight...that is why Christian Sandstrom holds a world record 820 ft throw with a Valkyrie because air pressure and wind do not make a difference...so remind me why do they throw at Big D in the Desert???
