ROBERT WILLIAM BENNETT SR.
4/2/1958-1/28/2009
Robert was born April 2, 1958 in Toledo, Ore to Carl Bennett and Judy Bennett-Barton. Robert and Dorothy Yellowtail, his Indian adopted family, raised him on the Crow Indian Reservation. He lived the cowboy life. One of his greatest joys was riding his favorite horse Capino over the land that he so loved. He was and always will be a true warrior.
He graduated from Saint Labre Indian School and later attended the Montana State University Billings College of Technology, completing a welding degree. He married and had two sons, James and Athen Bennett.
He joined the United States Marines Corps Reserve and considered that one of his greatest life experiences. He loved the Marine Corps and all that it stood for. HOORAH! (OohRah!)
On Aug. 4, 2001 he married Cheryl McPherson and helped her finish raising her two sons, Taylor and Logan Johnson. Robert worked at many jobs during his life, but the last two were his favorite, Gallatin Valley Furniture and the Holiday Gas Station. Robert loved to rock hound, fish, play folf, shoot pool and be with the people he loved. He was happiest in his mountains or on top of a rock pile in Alder Gulch.
Robert loved and was loved by almost anyone he ever met. Those that knew him would say he was the greatest man in the world. They are right.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Bennett and Judy Barton. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Bennett; his sons, James (Willow) Bennett, Athen Bennett, Taylor Johnson and Logan Johnson; grandsons, Skylar and Elias Bennett; sisters, Loni Yellowtail, Pamela O’Dell and Karlene Dillon; stepfather, Ted Barton and nieces Holly Rae Hugs and Ashley Dillon.
Robert loved Jesus and held his hand through the end. Cancer took his body, but God took his soul.
He is a cherished husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend, a gift from God to all who knew him.
My beautiful, beloved husband, our love will last forever. And know that I will be with you again when God comes for me. Thank you a million times for loving me and I know that we are one…always. I remain your loving wife.— Cheryl Bennett—
Do not stand at my
grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am the song that will never end. I am the love of family and friend. I am the child who has come to rest. In the arms of the father who knows him best.
When you see the sunset fair, I am the scented evening air. I am the joy of a task well done. I am the glow of the setting sun.
Do not stand there at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep.; (Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there, I did not die!)
